The ULC first drafted uniform state legislation on unclaimed property in 1954. That act was then substantially revised in 1981 as the Uniform Unclaimed Property Act, which was later updated in 1995. While the UUPA (1995) has been adopted in 16 states, and about 40 states have enacted a version of one of the Uniform Acts, there have been few recent adoptions and various states in recent years have adopted revisions to their unclaimed property acts that are not consistent with the Uniform Act. There also have been many technological developments in recent years that are not addressed in the current Uniform Act, as well as new types of potential unclaimed property, such as gift cards. This Committee will draft a revision of the Uniform Unclaimed Property Act in light of those developments.
