Uniform Law Commission Announces New Executive Director
Eric N. Weeks Named Executive Director
Former Deputy General Counsel with Utah State Legislature

May 15, 2025 – Eric N. Weeks has been named the Executive Director of the Uniform Law Commission (ULC), a national law group headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. The ULC comprises more than 350 practicing attorneys, judges, law professors, legislators and other state officials – all lawyers – appointed by every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, to draft and promote enactment of uniform laws that are designed to solve problems common to all the states.

"Eric brings a wealth of experience to the role of Executive Director of the ULC, having previously served 15 years as a uniform law commissioner from Utah" said Tim Berg, ULC President.  "His professional expertise in the development and enactment of legislation and his leadership will be instrumental in advancing the ULC's mission to provide states with well-conceived legislation that benefits all Americans and provides consistent interstate application while respecting diverse state interests."

As Executive Director of the ULC, Mr. Weeks will oversee the ULC's operations; coordinate the efforts of ULC commissioners; supervise the staff; provide strategic oversight on the development and enactment of ULC acts; oversee the work of ULC study and drafting committees; oversee editorial boards, monitoring committees, and other ULC committees; serve as liaison to other organizations, such as the American Law Institute (ALI) and the American Bar Association (ABA); engage in outreach to other organizations; and support the work of uniform law commissioners in developing and enacting uniform state legislation on critical legal issues.

Before joining the ULC, Mr. Weeks served as Deputy General Counsel with the Utah State Legislature in Salt Lake City and in private practice.  As Deputy General Counsel, he provided direct support for the legislative general counsel, served as lead counsel for multiple legislative committees, and managed bill drafting and various in-house counsel functions for the legislative branch.  He conducted trial and appellate litigation, including arguing successfully on behalf of the Utah Legislature before trial courts and the Utah Supreme Court, and serving as lead counsel for the legislature on state supreme court cases involving medical marijuana, initiatives, and redistricting. He has been with the Utah state legislature since 2004.

Prior to his work for the Utah state legislature, Mr. Weeks was in private practice in Salt Lake City focusing on real estate, corporate, and family law, and was a legal fellow with the United States Senate Judiciary Committee.  Mr. Weeks received his J.D. from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University, and his B.A. from Brigham Young University.

The Uniform Law Commission, now in its 134th year, works with state-appointed members working with legal experts, advisors, and observers to provide states with balanced, non-partisan legislation that brings clarity and stability to critical areas of state statutory law.  Since its founding in 1892, the ULC has promulgated more than 200 acts, among them such bulwarks of state statutory law as the Uniform Commercial Code, the Uniform Unclaimed Property Act, the Uniform Probate Code, the Uniform Partnership Act, the Uniform Securities Act, the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act, the Uniform Interstate Family Support Act, and the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act.

At the upcoming 134th Annual Meeting of the Uniform Law Commission, July 18-24, 2025, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, acts scheduled for final approval include the Assignment for Benefit of Creditors Act, the Judicial Interview of Children Act, and a Model State Uniform Law Commission Appointment Act.  Other acts that will be debated, but that are not scheduled for final approval, include updates to the Uniform Transfers to Minors Act, Conflict of Laws in Trusts and Estates Act, Child Digital Entertainers Act, Occupational Licenses of Servicemembers and Military Spouses Act, Commercial Financing Disclosure Act, and Indian Child Welfare Act Issues Act.
